DESCRIPTION:Developing your professional identity and expanding your profes
sional network are important aspects of the law school experience. Establi
shing\, cultivating\, and maintaining a professional relationship with an
attorney-mentor can help with professional development and in navigating y
our career. The University of Colorado Law School’s mentoring program ma
 tches 1L/rising 2L and 2L/rising 3L students with attorneys-mentors for a
one-on-one mentoring experience.\n\nStudents accepted to the CDO’s mento
ring program commit to their mentor-mentee relationship for 12 months. Dur
ing that time\, students and their mentors are expected to connect once or
twice a month. When in-person meetings are not an option\, virtual platfo
rms such as Zoom\, alongside telephone calls\, have proven to be effective
tools for building and maintaining a connection.\n\nThere are many benefi
ts to be gained through mentoring. The list in this article clearly identi
fies some practical ways a person can benefit from having a mentor. Buildi
ng and maintaining a relationship with a mentor can be especially helpful
for law students who are first-generation college graduates or professiona
ls. Career paths\, navigating law school\, professional norms\, networking
opportunities\, professional skills development\, and other areas of prof
essional interest are all appropriate topics of discussion as you build an
d deepen your relationship with your mentor. A mentor may also be willing
to serve as one of the attorney references required by some bar admission
applications. Please note it will not be your mentor’s responsibility to
provide you with employment leads or a job.\n\nIf you would like to parti
cipate in Colorado Law’s mentorship program and if you are committed to
fully engaging with this program and an assigned mentor for 12 months\, pl
ease complete this brief questionnaire by May 21. We plan to match student
s accepted into the program with their mentors in late June. The mentoring
year will start at the beginning of July 2026 and close at the end of Jun
e 2027.\n\nIf you have any questions\, feel free to email Alexia McCaskill
\, the CDO’s Senior Director for Professional Development or drop by her
  Wednesday afternoon drop in hours.
