The 1L virtual training session will be offered on Friday, September 11, 12 – 1 pm. The 1L session will be streamed in Room 204 and lunch will be served to September 11 attendees. AcuDetox is a 5 point ear acupuncture treatment that assists in reducing anxiety, depression, cravings for alcohol, drugs and with smoking cessation. In addition, it can improve sleep and feelings of well-being, and relief from trauma and stress. This treatment involves the placement of 5 sterile acupuncture needles in each ear that are kept in the ears for approx. 25-40 minutes. This treatment is done in an in-person group setting, at the Colorado Law building. This group is specific to supporting the law students, hosted by the embedded clinician at law, Danielle Ansted, LCSW.

Amy Bowers Cordalis

Amy Bowers Cordalis is a mother, fisherwoman, attorney, and member and former General Counsel of the Yurok Nation—the largest Indigenous Nation in California. She is currently the cofounder and executive director of the Ridges to Riffles Indigenous Conservation Group, a nonprofit advancing Indigenous sovereignty through the protection of cultural and natural resources, including the undamming of the Klamath River. She is the recipient of the UN’s highest environmental honor, Champions of the World Laureate, and has been named to the second annual TIME100 Climate List (2024), featuring the one hundred most influential leaders driving business to real climate action. She is the author of The Water Remembers (Hachette, 2025).

The Water Remembers by Amy Bowers Cordalis

A moving multigenerational memoir of Indigenous resistance, environmental justice, and a Yurok family's fight to protect their legacy and the Klamath River.

For the members of a Northern California tribe, salmon are the lifeblood of the people—a vital source of food, income, and cultural identity. When a catastrophic fish kill devastates the river, Amy Bowers Cordalis is propelled into action, reigniting her family's 170-year battle against the U.S. government.

In a moving and engrossing blend of memoir and history, Cordalis propels readers through generations of her family’s struggle, where she learns that the fight for survival is not only about fishing—it’s about protecting a way of life and the right of a species and river to exist. Her great-uncle's landmark Supreme Court case reaffirming her Nation’s rights to land, water, fish, and sovereignty, her great-grandmother’s defiant resistance during the Salmon Wars, and her family's ongoing battles against government overreach shape the deep commitment to justice that drives Cordalis forward.

When the source of the fish kill is revealed, Cordalis steps up as General Counsel for the Yurok Tribe to hold powerful corporate interests accountable, and to spearhead the largest river restoration project in history. The Schultz Lectureship in Energy

In 2007, the Schultz Lecture in Energy was launched to support an annual lecture by renowned scholars in energy or natural resources law. This series was made possible by the generosity of John H. and Cynthia H. Schultz and allows the Getches-Wilkinson Center (GWC) to bring in thought leaders from across the country. Our speakers address emerging issues and challenges in the oil and gas, energy, and natural resources fields, providing valuable information to policymakers, practitioners, business executives, students, and the academic community.

John Schultz (CU Econ, Political. Science ‘51) (CU Law ‘53) was an oil and gas attorney whose impactful career in Colorado and the Western U.S. spanned the second half of the 20th century. John Schultz passed away on April 5, 2020, surrounded by family in the comfort of his own home in Lafayette, Colorado. Cynthia Schultz was a University of Colorado administrative staff member who served the University in many ways. She was a member of the Graduate School Advisory Council, the Graduate School Resource Committee, and on the Ad Hoc Task Force on Graduate Education. Cynthia passed away on December 20, 2011. Both John’s and Cynthia’s generosity of time with our students was exceptional.

Their legacies continue, in part, through their substantial gifts to the University of Colorado, Colorado Law, and to the GWC where we are so appreciative of the Schultz family’s generosity. The family’s continued commitment means that this lecture can be free and open to the public. The format (normally) includes a public reception following the talk, providing the opportunity to continue a lively discussion, as well as a dinner with the speaker, the extended Schultz family, the Dean, GWC faculty, and several law students.

Stephen Martinez, who spent more than 27 years imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, was freed on April 21, 2026, by a Denver District Court judge after new evidence showed the infant he was convicted of murdering had a pre-existing respiratory illness that caused her death.

The court’s ruling follows years of extensive investigation and advocacy led by Korey Wise Innocence Project (KWIP) at the University of Colorado Boulder Law School with support from Stinson LLP, including Perry Glantz and Judith Araujo, along with Seth Temin. The Ruth Wright Distinguished Lecture in Natural Resources

In 2018, the GWC received a generous gift from the Wright Family Foundation to establish the Ruth Wright Distinguished Lecture in Natural Resources in honor of her inspiring legacy as a leader in western natural resources, land conservation, and environmental policy and advocacy. With this support, we look forward to bringing this free event to our community for years to come.

As a legislator, environmentalist, and historian, Ruth Wright dedicated her career to environmental issues and activism. While a student at Colorado Law, she led efforts to preserve Boulder’s open space and limit the height of buildings in Boulder to 55 feet to protect enjoyment of the unique landscape for the ages. In 1980, she was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives, where she represented Boulder until 1994. She was also the second woman ever to become the House minority leader, a role she held from 1986 until 1992. While serving in the House of Representatives, Wright continued to be a strategic champion for the environment, and has been recognized by such groups as the Colorado Wildlife Foundation, the ACLU, the Sierra Club, and Colorado Open Lands.

The CO PDs offer internships at metro-area and rural Colorado PD offices, and the office annually hires a group of entry-level public defender attorneys. The municipal PD offices and OADC also regularly hire students for summer and academic year opportunities.

Co-sponsored by law school’s Public Defense Student Association and the Career Development Office, join attorneys from these offices to learn more about the life and career path of a public defender, as well as opportunities for student involvement. Lunch will be provided!

The Project was started by American University in 1999, and currently has chapters in 18 states. The goal of the Project is to increase youth awareness and understanding of our legal system and the Constitution by sending upper-level law students into public high schools to teach a semester-long course about the law, juvenile justice, and other related topics.

Each fall, Colorado law students work with high school students to foster debate and discussion about important legal issues that impact students' lives. Using a problem developed every year by the national headquarters of the Project, law students teach the high school students how to reason, formulate persuasive arguments, and make oral presentations on each side of the problem. Each fall, the Colorado law students prepare for their teaching roles by taking a course, LAWS 7285 Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project.

In November, interested high school students who participated in the Project have the opportunity to compete against each other in a state-wide moot court competition. The competition is hosted by the White Center and judged by Justices from the Colorado Supreme Court and Judges from the Colorado Court of Appeals and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. The top six finalists of that competition then represent Colorado in the national competition, accompanied by their law student coaches.

These casual gatherings are a chance to hear directly from faculty about what they’re working on, ask questions, and join an open discussion in a relaxed setting. No required reading or prior expertise is needed—just bring your curiosity!

Each session, a faculty member will give a short talk about their current work before opening discussion around the table, in a colloquium-style setting. If the series is successful and student participation is strong, we hope to expand opportunities for students to become more involved, including workshopping ideas in the spring semester.

Breakfast and coffee will be provided. We hope you’ll join us, meet your faculty outside the classroom, and be part of the conversation!
