Mid-trial, Meta settled. The federal trial had just opened in Oakland, with Mark Zuckerberg expected to testify, when the case ended in a settlement requiring Meta to pay over $17 billion and adopt sweeping child-safety reforms on Instagram and Facebook, one of the largest state consumer protection settlements in history. Some observers are calling it social media’s version of the 1990s tobacco settlement, one that could reshape the industry and how young people experience these platforms.

Colorado was at the center of the case. Colorado was one of the four states whose case went to trial before the settlement cut it short, and the state will receive close to $615 million over nine years, dedicated to protecting and restoring the mental health and safety of Colorado children. The terms go well beyond money. They cover limiting notifications at night and during school, encouraging breaks, restricting harmful features, and requiring age assurance technology.

The Ruth Wright Distinguished Lecture in Natural Resources

In 2018, the GWC received a generous gift from the Wright Family Foundation to establish the Ruth Wright Distinguished Lecture in Natural Resources in honor of her inspiring legacy as a leader in western natural resources, land conservation, and environmental policy and advocacy. With this support, we look forward to bringing this free event to our community for years to come.

As a legislator, environmentalist, and historian, Ruth Wright dedicated her career to environmental issues and activism. While a student at Colorado Law, she led efforts to preserve Boulder’s open space and limit the height of buildings in Boulder to 55 feet to protect enjoyment of the unique landscape for the ages. In 1980, she was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives, where she represented Boulder until 1994. She was also the second woman ever to become the House minority leader, a role she held from 1986 until 1992. While serving in the House of Representatives, Wright continued to be a strategic champion for the environment, and has been recognized by such groups as the Colorado Wildlife Foundation, the ACLU, the Sierra Club, and Colorado Open Lands.

Judge Ted Tow has served on the Colorado Court of Appeals since February 2018, and became the Court’s tenth Chief Judge on August 1, 2026. Before joining the appellate court, Chief Judge Tow served as a District Judge in the 17th Judicial District (Adams County). Prior to his judicial service, he served as the Executive Director of the Colorado District Attorneys’ Council, following several years as a deputy district attorney. He began his legal career in private practice, working as an associate primarily in labor and employment for three different law firms in Chicago and Denver. Judge Tow is a member of the Law Club and a graduate, faculty member, and former co-director of the Colorado Institute for Faculty Excellence in Judicial Education, and a frequent presenter on issues involving appellate and trial skills, ethics and professionalism, and inclusive courtrooms.

Judge Olafson (he/him/his) has been on the bench since 2023. Prior to his appointment, Judge Olafson was an experienced corporate, employment, commercial, and litigation attorney, who was routinely recognized by SuperLawyers, Best Lawyers, and 5280 Magazine. Judge Olafson is also a frequent and an award-winning speaker and leader regarding organizational engagement and cognitive bias. Judge Olafson has his BA from the University of North Dakota and his JD from the Texas Tech University School of Law. Judge Olafson also has certificates from Cornell University and Harvard University, where he studied cognitive bias.

Judge Olafson currently serves as the Secretary of the Board for the Center for Legal Inclusiveness, Student Liaison for the Sam Cary Bar Association, the Immediate Past President of the Nathan Yip Foundation, and an ex officio Director for Opera Colorado. Judge Olafson is also the President Emeritus for the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, an organization he served for over ten years. He is the recipient of the 2021 Attorney of the Year award from the Colorado LGBT Bar Association, the 2022 Ben Aisenberg Diversity Leadership Award from the Sam Cary Bar Association, the 2022 Professor Benson Public Service Award from the Texas Tech University School of Law, and a 2024 Spotlight Award recipient from the CLBA.

Hayden DePorter, Esq., is an attorney at HKM Employment Attorneys. Prior to joining HKM, Hayden spent three years at the Colorado Court of Appeals as an appellate law clerk where they drafted over fifty opinions. In 2023, Hayden was selected as one of 20 attorneys in the state to participate in the Colorado Bar Association Leadership Training Program (COBALT). Hayden is passionate about employment issues and civil rights. They are a frequent speaker on employment law, civil rights, and inclusion. They have presented across the country — from New England to the West Coast — on inclusive workplace practices and the use of inclusive language in the courts. Hayden is currently a board member on the Colorado LGBTQ+ Bar Association and is the co-chair of the CBA Professionalism Coordinating Council. Outside of practicing law, Hayden enjoys spending time with their spouse and kids, biking, and growing vegetables in their garden.

What are the opportunities, and what makes these technologies genuinely useful or beneficial? At the same time, increasingly human-like interactions have raised troubling questions about harmful advice, emotional dependency, manipulation, self-harm, impersonation, and other unintended consequences. When these systems cause harm, who should be responsible? What risks and legal obligations should companies anticipate when developing and deploying the technology? This interdisciplinary conversation will explore the promise and pitfalls of AI companions, emerging approaches to accountability and liability, and what responsible design and deployment of these technologies might look like.

Judge Reeves’ lecture, entitled “Democracy at Sentencing,” will provide a reflection on Judge Reeves’ time as Chair of the United States Sentencing Commission and the role of that agency in making the federal criminal justice system better reflect democratic commitments to equality, inclusion, and participation.

The Interview Closet is a professional clothing closet of gently worn clothing donated by alumni and others seeking to support Colorado Law students. In addition to full suits, the Interview Closet has pieces appropriate for business casual attire.

The Project was started by American University in 1999, and currently has chapters in 18 states. The goal of the Project is to increase youth awareness and understanding of our legal system and the Constitution by sending upper-level law students into public high schools to teach a semester-long course about the law, juvenile justice, and other related topics.

Each fall, Colorado law students work with high school students to foster debate and discussion about important legal issues that impact students' lives. Using a problem developed every year by the national headquarters of the Project, law students teach the high school students how to reason, formulate persuasive arguments, and make oral presentations on each side of the problem. Each fall, the Colorado law students prepare for their teaching roles by taking a course, LAWS 7285 Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project.

In November, interested high school students who participated in the Project have the opportunity to compete against each other in a state-wide moot court competition. The competition is hosted by the White Center and judged by Justices from the Colorado Supreme Court and Judges from the Colorado Court of Appeals and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. The top six finalists of that competition then represent Colorado in the national competition, accompanied by their law student coaches.

In addition, it can improve sleep and feelings of well-being, while providing relief from trauma and stress. This treatment involves the placement of 5 sterile acupuncture needles in each ear that are kept in the ears for approx. 25-40 minutes. This treatment is done in a group setting.

Unfortunately, suits can be expensive, and the cost keeps some students from buying what they need. Business casual attire for internships, externships, and networking opportunities can also be costly. The CDO recognizes that not being able to afford appropriate professional clothing can be stressful, so it established the “Interview Closet.”

The Interview Closet is a professional clothing closet of gently worn clothing donated by alumni and others seeking to support Colorado Law students. In addition to full suits, the Interview Closet has pieces appropriate for business casual attire.

The Interview Closet’s Fall 2026 drop-in hours are Tuesdays, 11 am – 1 pm. Students using the Interview Closet are expected to familiarize themselves with the use guidelines linked here. If you have questions, please contact Alexia McCaskill in the CDO.
