Thankfully, unlike many states that elect judges through partisan campaigns, Colorado practices a merit-based selection process to appoint judges, and the Colorado Judicial Institute (CJI) is an organization that makes sure it stays that way. Protests will be happening across the state, and the National Lawyers Guild is trying to get observers at as many of these protests as possible to ensure that the rights of those involved will be protected.

For that purpose, we will be holding one last Legal Observer Training for this academic year on March 25 at 4:30pm in Room 204 (this will be right after the 1L class sign-up orientation, so I know you all will be here).

For those not in-the-know, Legal Observers are neutral 3rd parties who attend protests to keep an eye on the activities of law enforcement to make sure that no one's rights are being violated.

It is an essaential role in political actions, especially in light of our rapidly deteriorating constitutional protections.

Come on by and get with the movement.

Lynn Pinnekamp, J.D., is the Lexis Account Manger for the University of Colorado Law School, University of Denver, Sturm College of Law, and University of Wyoming College of Law. Jennifer Belz, J.D., is a product manager dedicated to innovating and applying new technology to find solutions to complex challenges facing legal researchers and those employed in the business of law. Jennifer has been with LexisNexis for 17 years. In her current role, she serves as Principal Product Manager focused on LexisNexis Protégé, General AI, and Conversational Search. Stephen Bloch is an attorney and legal director at the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA). SUWA is Utah’s largest conservation organization. Formed in 1983, its mission is the preservation of the outstanding wilderness at the heart of the Colorado Plateau, and the management of these lands in their natural state for the benefit of all Americans. Steve received his law degree from the S.J Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah and has worked at SUWA since 1999. In 2011, he was the Utah State Bar Energy, Natural Resources and Environmental Law (ENREL) Section’s Lawyer of the Year and he served as ENREL Section Chair in 2019-2020. Steve currently serves on the Salt Lake City Parks, Natural Lands, Urban Forestry & Trails Advisory Board. He and his family live in Salt Lake City.

As you prepare your submission, please keep the following in mind:

Budget coverage: April’s meeting will address funding requests for the full academic year (July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027). Be sure to include all anticipated needs within this period.

Submit early if possible: Early submissions are strongly encouraged. Sending your request ahead of the deadline allows time for review and feedback to help ensure your budget is ready for committee consideration.

Only include planned events: Events that are still undefined or highly tentative (for example, no confirmed speaker or unclear purpose) should not be included at this time. Additional funding opportunities will be available at later meetings during the 2026–2027 academic year.

Discretionary allocation: Each student organization automatically receives a $500 discretionary allocation for non–legal education expenses, such as food for general body meetings. Please do not include this amount in your budget request. Your submission should reflect additional funding needs related to legal education events and activities.

Meeting attendance: The Student Fee Committee meeting will take place on Thursday, April 23 from 12 PM to 3 PM. At least one representative from your organization is expected to attend and be prepared to discuss your request and answer questions.

The Solicitor General serves as the state's chief appellate lawyer, representing Colorado in supreme court cases, crafting legal strategy on matters of statewide importance, and setting precedent that shapes Colorado law for generations. This program brings together current Solicitor General Shannon Stevenson, along with past Solicitors Richard Westfall, Eric Olson, Frederick Yarger, and Daniel Domenico—a remarkable assembly of advocates who have collectively argued hundreds of cases before Colorado and the Nation’s highest courts and shaped decades of appellate jurisprudence. This is a rare opportunity to hear candid reflections on high-stakes cases, learn the art of oral argument from masters of the craft, and gain insider perspectives on a role that sits at the intersection of law, policy, and persuasion.

The Colorado River is facing unprecedented change and uncertainty. Average annual flows continue to decline, and negotiations to craft post-2026 guidelines to manage the river have repeatedly bogged down in disagreements regarding rights and delivery obligations. While some clarity may emerge in the coming months, the ability to sustain many existing municipal and agricultural water users is already being compromised. Meanwhile, there is growing recognition that a durable resolution must also address the water rights of sovereign Tribal nations and better integrate environmental values into river management. All sovereigns, stakeholders, and sectors must continue to adapt and innovate.

The Getches-Wilkinson Center and Water & Tribes Initiative will co-convene the 2026 Conference on the Colorado River at the Wolf Law Building in Boulder, CO.
